Strake Jesuit to Sponsor International Festival, Fun Run

Grab an egg roll or have a taste of Thai or Cuban food, topped with a French pastry or funnel cake at the Spring Fling International Festival at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School from noon-6 p.m., Sunday, March 12, on the school grounds at 8900 Bellaire Boulevard near Gessner.

“This year’s Spring Fling will feature more international food than ever as well as Cajun and old favorites, said Liz Schlotzhauer, co-chairman.  “Feasting may continue long after the event with casseroles or barbecue to take home,” she said.

“We’ve expanded Bambino Land for small children and added a White Elephant Sale as well as a marketplace of vendors to the offerings, so women as well as men will want to stay for the afternoon,” said Paula Ruth Gochnour, co-chairman.

“One highlight of this year’s prizes are the unreleased Pokemonä cards and stuffed animals,” Schlotzhauer said.  “Other great prizes include a signed Mark McGuire baseball along with signed sports memorabilia from Clyde Drexler, Hakeem Olajuwon, Sammy Sosa  and Roger Clemons.”

Alumni will want to gather for the multi-year photo of graduates about 3:30 p.m.

The second annual fun run will kick-off the event with the first race beginning at 9 a.m.  Short course races will be offered for children ages 3-5.  First and second grade students will run a half-mile course.  A variety of runs and walks up to three miles will be offered for students and adults of all ages, including a 3-person, 3-mile relay for teams.  Awards will be presented in each category.

Last year’s Spring Fling raised $87,000 for student financial aid at Strake Jesuit, a multi-denominational and multi-ethnic school of 700 college-bound boys in training to be leaders.  About 100 students receive financial aid.   Each Strake senior must perform 100 hours of service to the community before graduation.  Additional information about the school may be accessed at www.strakejesuit.org.
