Community Associations Institute Seminar
Teaches Financial Management & Problem Prevention
Neighbors working on a community association board will learn how to detect fraud, embezzlement and misreporting, as well as make appropriate investment decisions for their community association at a seminar sponsored by the Greater Houston Chapter of the Community Associations Institute from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7, at the Red Lion Hotel, 2525 West Loop South in the Galleria area.
“Volunteers elected or appointed to a community association board are entrusted with managing millions of dollars of assessments and fees for others in the community,” said John B. Cartwright, a Certified Public Account, CAI president and seminar speaker who lives and works in west Houston. “We are equipping these volunteers with financial knowledge to help them identify problems or prevent them.”
Other seminar speakers are Jeff Canady, Joseph H. Stoller, CAI treasurer, and Barry M. Wuntch, board member and chairman of the CPA Committee organizing the seminar. All of these speakers are Certified Public Accountants with independent practices in the Galleria area.
Seminar topics will range from how to read a financial statement and auditor’s report to evaluate an association’s performance, tax planning techniques and issues, critical financial analysis and steps for producing reliable financial statements. Other topics address an association’s fraud and misreporting risks, prevention and detection of embezzlement, fraud and accounting problems, and developing and communicating an investment policy.
Cost of the seminar is $40 for CAI members and $50 for non-members registering in advance and $45 for CAI members and $55 for non-members paying at the door. Early bird discounts are available for registrations before Sept. 1. For registration information, call 713-784-5462.
